Holiday desserts. I've made a lot of them in the past month or so. The rule of thumb is that the dessert wine should be sweeter than the dessert. It paired really well with my Raspberry Pavlova. This wine has a slight fizz, and is very sweet and very fruity. It was a hit. And for $11.99 is was a solid hit.
Why I chose the Natale Verga Moscato D'Asti:
I was shopping for a dessert wine since I decided not to go with our traditional Baume de Venice (Sorry VCE, I broke tradition). I wanted it sparkling and I wanted it to be Italian. I used what I learned in my Italian wine class to make my choice.
Italy controls their wine production very closely. There are only 33 DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) geographic areas in Italy. I picked this Moscato D'Asti from Piemonte (I have happy memories of Piemonte in the North West of Italy). You can note a regional wine (DOC/G "appellation") by the collar label. This just means that someone is watching and the grapes came from where the say they came from. Also, you have a better chance of this being a pretty good wine.
Now I can't wait to get to Trader Joe's next week and cruise the aisles. Scoping out the bottles, reading the labels, and thinking in my head what I can cook to go with the bottles. 2010 is going to be a good year! My next class is going to be on "New World vs. Old World Wines". Look out Australia & New Zealand, here I come!
