Buil & Gine GineGine `07 Priorat (not TJ's) $18.99 ***

Living well is the best revenge....

I came home on Friday night to a ransacked apartment.  My computer, electronics and other various things stolen.  My bedroom window kicked in, my teddy bear crumpled under broken glass on my bed.  It was not a good night.

The next day, with police, supervisors, detectives, forensics, the handyman, and my landlord all milling about, I retreated to the kitchen and cooked.  Chopping was therapeutic.  And since I had no computer, I wrote this review old school, by hand on a legal pad. Now I have a new Dell netbook to post with....

This wine is from my Spanish Wine class at Bacchus.  I learned that Spain also has DO and DOC labeling to police truth in labellings about where the wine comes from.  This is a DO wine.  Yeah, DO guaranteed to be from the region of Priorat.  It is good wine.  Kinda harsh, Dark cherry taste with a bit of tobacco and some minerality - slate?  It is a food wine, and I wished that I had been cooking Lamb - because the spiciness combined with the fruity lightness of the wine would go well with the distinct taste of well cooked lamb.  But all I had was Hangar Steak, and this was going to be a revenge meal.

As the workmen were retrofitting my apartment into a ghetto Fort Knox, I unscrewed the cap and poured a glug into my Riedel Vinum Extreme Bordeaux stem (yes, drinking wine out of a HUGE, expensive thin piece of crystal does make a difference - I think that it is the surface area - this glass is like a swimming pool for wine molecules - where as my regular wine glasses are just a bathtub).  I was determined to use what wasn't stolen or broken, and the thief (thank goodness) skipped my wine rack and my bar set up (and I was damn sure that my lunch was going to be better than any lunch he could have).

After my first glug, I ran a glass through the vinturi.  It was like velvet - with just a hint of tannins, and a lovely complex flavor.  I think that this will also be a wine that ages well.

Glass in hand, I swirled, sniffed, sipped the wine and then stirred the risotto.  The thief may have trashed my bedroom, stolen my computer and cameras & suitcases, but I was determined to have a great lunch. This Priorat added a great smell & smooth fruity texture with dark undertones, a good compliment to my revenge lunch.

Menu:
Hangar steak
Butternut Squash, Bacon and Sage Risotto
Creamed Spinach

  2. Thanks Victoria. It has been an interesting weekend to say the least. I've replaced my computer equipment, which was the most important, now I am just dealing with the fall out from having my home broken into. (I am in the very ANGRY stage right now)
